Ron Coleman MAFA
Elected member of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts
Ron’s work is largely driven by a desire to create expressive, colourful, and visually attention grabbing paintings. His colourist painting style is mainly abstract expressionist in approach using all kinds of acrylic water based paint. Ron’s paintings have a balance and harmony that results from the handling of colour relationships, texture and vibrant brushwork, and from the careful, thoughtful, but sometimes serendipitous arrangement of form and colour. The resulting abstract image may have had it’s origin in remembered landscape, journey, or destination. The painting may be a response to a feeling at some time, or in some situation.
Although Ron had an interest in painting for many years it was only after following a three year Open College of the Arts course in the 1990’s that he began a serious and in-depth interest in painting. In 2011, Ron was instrumental in bringing an Open art exhibition back to Stockport Art Gallery, and he was a founder member of SKarts, the organisers of the annual Open Contemporary Art Exhibition in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Ron has had much success exhibiting in local galleries and in regional adjudicated Open exhibitions over many years.
Many artists and movements have influenced his work, ranging from the St. Ives abstract artists to the Scottish Colourists, and he continues to take inspiration from the American expressionists as well as many contemporary British artists.
Ron has been a member of Stockport Art Guild for many years, and is an elected member of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.
