“Geoff Archer draws inspiration from what may be seen rather than what can be imagined, aiming to stress that what he represents truly exists.”

Geoff Archer

Born 1945
BA (Hons) MA Art History

Geoff initially studied architecture at Manchester Regional College of Art and Design, later transferring to an Art Foundation Course. He went on to study Fine Art at Nottingham School of Art and completed a post-graduate teaching degree at Reading University, leading to a teaching career spanning 30 years. Geoff was awarded an MA in Art History from the University of Manchester in the 1990s and has subsequently written three books.

During the 1980s and much of the 1990s, Geoff’s subject was the urban landscape, yet this changed dramatically after 1998 when, following some years of drawing the rocky outcrops of the Peak District National Park, the first paintings of rocks were produced. As had previously been evident in his images of the urban landscape, this latter subject was characterised by a tendency to ‘close in’, whereby the exclusion of both earth and sky in favour of concentration on pattern, colour, tone and texture, deliberately created a more abstract effect.

More recently Geoff’s work has seen a return to a wider range of urban subjects. A visit to the ‘Boneyard’ in Las Vegas – a repository of old discarded casino and motel signs – inspired a series of new paintings, which were followed by paintings of derelict ghost town buildings, abandoned automobiles and other aspects of the disappearing American landscape.

Geoff considers himself and his art to be grounded in realism, drawing inspiration from what may be seen rather than what can be imagined, aiming to stress that what he represents truly exists.
