Lisa Denyer
Born 1984
BA (Hons) Fine Art
Lisa Denyer is an award winning artist based in Manchester and Edinburgh. Her practice explores the properties of paint in a manner that is both experimental and contemplative. Preferring not to work on canvas, her supports are heavy plywood, hardboard, sandpaper or clay, often handmade by the artist. Lisa selects the materials for their textual qualities and for the way they may assist and disrupt the application of paint, with the edges being integral to the work. There the paint is often allowed to flow and spill over, hinting at colours layered beneath the surface and emphasising the physicality of the painting process.
Lisa graduated Coventry University in 2009 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. She was awarded second prize in the Gilchrist Fisher Award 2010, She was awarded second prize in the Gilchrist Fisher Award 2010. Following relocation to Manchester, Lisa presented Geode, a solo exhibition at South Square Gallery, Thornton, in 2014. In 2015, she was awarded first prize and a subsequent solo exhibit in the PS Mirabel Open. Lisa was nominated for the Kleinwort Hambros Prize 2018, held at the V&A, London.
During 2016 to 2018, Lisa was based in Berlin, first on residency at Galerie Martin Mertens then at Studios-ID, Genslerstraße. Her initial months in the city affected her work dramatically, when vibrant colours began to seep into her palette as antithesis to the dark Berlin winter. At the end of this period came a solo show at Volume Gallery, representing the culmination of influences from her time in the city. Lisa has also spent time in Madrid, where she exhibited at various events including Sobre fragmentos y materia, a two person show with Valeria Maculan at Kir Royal.
Upon returning to Manchester, Lisa presented new work in Reset, a solo show at Paper Gallery. Other recent exhibitions include Castlefield Gallery, SE9 Container Gallery, London, Yantai Art Museum, China, and The National Museum of Poland, Gdańsk. Her work is held in the The Priseman-Seabrook Collection, and private collections in the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, USA, and France.
