“ I like the calm, mindful practice of working with clay and the tactile, smooth forms I create reflect that. The Raku and smoke firing processes create magical, soft patterns on the surface of the vessels. I love the serendipity- you never quite know the end result until it happens and the sense that it is possible to emerge from the flames stronger and more beautiful than before.

Sally Riley

Sally is a ceramic artist whose mindful practice creates smooth, tactile pottery, enhanced by smoke firing and Raku.

Born in Manchester in the 1960s, Sally grew up with a strong sense of community, family history and a vibrant multicultural friendship group at the local grammar school. In her teens she moved to rural Cheshire, exchanging the bustle of the city for the green and calm of the countryside. Sally spent her university days in the Yorkshire Dales and in France. A long teaching career took her to Africa and China on cultural exchanges. She taught young children and encouraged a love of art and design through multicultural festivals organised with teams of art providers.

When Sally retired from teaching she turned to studying art herself over a period of six years and was drawn to ceramic art and pottery where she gained a distinction at HNC. Sally now makes her own art and teaches adults. She likes the calm, mindful practice of working with clay and the tactile, smooth forms she creates that reflect that.

The Raku and smoke firing processes create magical, soft patterns on the surface of the vessels. She loves the serendipity – you never quite know the end result until it happens and the sense that it is possible to emerge from the flames stronger and more beautiful than before.
