A horticulturalist by training, Stuart often uses plants and natural forms as the inspiration for a painting.
A horticulturalist by training, Stuart often uses plants and natural forms as the inspiration for a painting. From a small detail or pattern, to the complexity of the wider landscape, Stuart is fascinated by the shapes, textures and colours found in plant life, alongside their relationship with the environment. Stuart’s work represents his desire to create his own individual interpretation of what may be seen in nature.
An active member of the Urban Sketching movement, Stuart frequently sketches on location, seeking to capture what he sees from direct observation, to which end he carries a sketchbook and pencil at all times and sketches whenever he travels. These sketches provide the initial material for completed works but are also created for the pure enjoyment of the experience.
Pen, pencil, crayon, ink, watercolour and acrylic are the materials most familiar in Stuart’s work, but above all he is interested in experimenting with mixed media, using whatever material achieves the desired response in each piece of work.
