Sophie Smorczewski

Sophie is a London based abstract landscape painter who works with oil and homemade pigments on canvas.

Growing up in a remote house in the woods, Smorczewski is fascinated by nature’s interconnectivity. Her oil paintings explore memories of the landscape, distorted by passing time, which takes them to a dreamlike space.

Through her practice, the artist investigates the alchemy of colour theory and its emotive qualities. Peter Doig is of huge influence as he too is intrigued by the otherworldliness of nature.

A isolating period of illness forced Smorczewski to reconsider the physicality of painting. When energy was so precious, every interaction with the canvas was heightened. Since recovery, the artist’s process is almost ritualistic as she negotiates with the work.

Smorczewski creates her own pigments from organic matter. This provides a multi-sensory experience for the viewer as these oxidise and decay. Painting was essential in the artists rehabilitation. She hopes her work grants others safe space for their own reflections.

Born in 1999, Smorczewski graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2021. She is beginning her MFA in painting at The Slade in September 2023.
