Lisa Penson

Lisa is an abstract painter who explores shape, colour and mark through intuitive, process-led painting. Her work is painted in acrylic/mixed media on square cradled wooden panels or canvas.

Lisa was born in Macclesfield in 1967 and always had a passion for art from an early age, winning the Peak District National Park Painting Competition at the age of 10! After attending art school in the 80’s and 90’s, she worked in various art related roles such as a Graphic Designer, Community Arts Practitioner, Art Tutor and Arts Coordinator. Since 2017, Lisa has exhibited her paintings widely throughout the UK including Ferens Art Gallery (Hull), Tarpey Gallery (Castle Donington) and the Royal West of England Academy of Art (Bristol).

Lisa sees her process-led painting practice as a form of sadhana (spiritual practice) that allows her to maintain a connection to herself and to the energetic field that forms all things. Choices pertaining to colour, composition, or theme are not pre-planned; she allows whatever wants to arise, to emerge organically without judgement, each mark leading to the next. Although ‘process’ plays an important role in her work, Lisa seeks visual balance by utilising contrasting shapes, colours and marks as a way of unifying a finished painting. She wants this to represent the unification of dualistic archetypal principles that sustain universal harmony such as the chaos/control, masculine/feminine or yin/yang.
