“ Like many of us, I am a people watcher and a storyteller… I love observing social interactions and wondering about the stories behind these little glimpses of people’s lives. “

Amanda Taylor

Amanda is a semi-abstract figurative artist who seeks stories, using acrylic paint and drawing materials on board.

Until recently Amanda was working only from imagination, with the unpredictability of found figures emerging from an abstract. They usually had a story to tell, or something to say for themselves.

More recently she has been using references from Google Street View and images captured from TV documentaries for portrait subjects… catching unrehearsed and unselfconscious views of people just being people allows their story to speak to her.

Amanda works predominantly in acrylics and includes drawing media such as ink and charcoal. Layering paint, sanding and glazing are a big part of her artmaking so work is often on wooden boards which allow the freedom to get out the power sander, scraper or sandpaper when needed.

Amanda found her way into painting during first lockdown via online courses, despite having drawn all her life. Her only art qualification is a GCE Art achieved 50 years ago and a years’ 3D design part-time degree. Her interests include wood-carving and ceramic sculpture, one of which was exhibited at the Manchester Open Art Exhibition many years ago.
